Demystifying Machine Quilting: A Comprehensive Guide to Key Terms

Understanding the terminology!

Embarking on the journey of machine quilting can be an exciting yet overwhelming experience, especially for those new to the craft.

The world of machine quilting comes with its own set of terminology that might seem like a foreign language to beginners. In this blog post, we aim to demystify some of the essential terms in machine quilting, ensuring both quilters and their customers are on the same page.

Edge-to-Edge Quilting (Pantograph):
Also referred to as pantograph, all-over quilting, or continuous line quilting, edge-to-edge quilting involves repeatedly quilting a specific design in rows across the entire quilt. This technique is applied without a separate border or block design, creating a cohesive and continuous pattern throughout the quilt. Educating oneself and customers on this method helps establish clear expectations for the final product.

Custom Quilting:
Custom quilting involves individually quilting each quilt block, and the border features a separate quilting design. Techniques such as stitch in the ditch, cross hatching, and outlining of appliqué can be incorporated into custom quilting, providing a more intricate and personalized touch.

Freehand Quilting:
Freehand quilting, also known as free-motion quilting, is a technique where the quilter guides the machine by hand. Unlike computerized designs, the outcome of freehand quilting relies on the quilter's skill and creativity. This method allows for more artistic freedom, resulting in unique and personalized quilting patterns.

Computerised Quilting:
In computerized quilting, a computer guides the quilting machine to stitch out a predetermined design. This technology is versatile, accommodating both edge-to-edge designs and custom quilting. Despite the automation, the operator's skill is crucial in understanding placement, making appropriate choices, and editing designs to fit imperfect quilts.

Stitch Regulator:
Most longarm quilting machines come equipped with stitch regulators, ensuring consistent stitch length during quilting. This feature aids quilters in maintaining a professional and polished appearance in their work, contributing to the overall quality of the finished quilt.

Basting:
Basting is a crucial step in quilting where the quilt sandwich is held together with large, easily removable stitches or pins. Some quilters even offer basting services specifically for hand quilters, providing a secure foundation for the quilting process.

Longarm Quilting Machine:
A longarm quilting machine is a specialized sewing machine with a throat space greater than 15 inches. Mounted on a quilting frame with rollers, this machine allows for efficient quilting by enabling the quilt to be rolled up and kept in position during the quilting process.

Tension:
Tension in machine quilting refers to the balance between the top quilting thread and the bobbin thread. Achieving the right tension is crucial, ensuring that the two threads overlap correctly within the middle layer of the quilt. Understanding and maintaining proper tension contributes to the overall quality and durability of the quilt.

Aspiring machine quilters and their customers can navigate the world of quilting with confidence by familiarizing themselves with these essential terms. Whether opting for edge-to-edge, freehand, or computerized quilting, a solid understanding of these techniques and terminology will enhance the quilting experience and lead to stunning, professionally finished quilts.
